Allah is the Arabic word for God — the One, unique Creator of everything that exists. It is not the name of a different or "foreign" deity: Arabic-speaking Christians and Jews also use the word Allah in their Bibles and prayers. When Muslims say "Allah," they mean the same One God who created Adam, spoke to Moses, and sent Jesus — the God of all humanity.
What the Qur'an Says About Allah
The clearest description of Allah in the entire Qur'an is a chapter just four verses long, which Muslims recite constantly:
"Say: He is Allah, the One. Allah, the Eternal Refuge. He neither begets nor is born, nor is there to Him any equivalent."
(Surah Al-Ikhlas, 112:1–4)
From this and hundreds of verses like it, Muslims understand that Allah is:
- One — with no partners, no equals, and no rivals. This absolute oneness of God, called tawhid, is the foundation of all of Islam.
- The Creator — of the universe, of life, and of every human being, sustaining all of it at every moment.
- Beyond His creation — He is not a man, not an idol, not a force of nature, and "there is nothing like unto Him" (Surah Ash-Shura, 42:11).
- Near and merciful — the Qur'an says He is "closer to him than his jugular vein" (Surah Qaf, 50:16), and every chapter but one opens in the name of Allah, "the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful."
The Most Beautiful Names
The Qur'an teaches that "to Allah belong the most beautiful names" (Surah Al-A'raf, 7:180). Muslims know Him through these names — the Merciful, the Just, the Forgiving, the Provider, the Loving — and call on Him by them in prayer. Each name reveals something of how Allah relates to His creation.
What Allah Is Not
Islam is equally clear about what Allah is not. He has no son, no father, and no human form. He does not share His divinity with saints, statues, or celestial bodies. He never grows tired, never dies, and depends on nothing — while everything depends on Him. That is why Muslims direct worship to Allah alone, and to no one and nothing else.
In One Sentence
Allah is the One God of all creation — utterly unique, perfectly merciful and just — who made you, sustains you, and invites you to know Him.
