الحج

The Fifth Pillar of Islam

Scroll to explore

وَلِلَّهِ عَلَى ٱلنَّاسِ حِجُّ ٱلْبَيْتِ مَنِ ٱسْتَطَاعَ إِلَيْهِ سَبِيلًا

Surah Al-Imran 3:97

"And Hajj to the House is a duty that mankind owes to Allah, for whoever is able to find a way there."

"Whoever performs Hajj and does not commit any obscenity or wickedness returns as the day his mother bore him."

— Sahih al-Bukhari 1521

Hajj is the fifth and final pillar of Islam — an obligation upon every Muslim who is physically and financially able to undertake it, at least once in their lifetime. It is the largest annual gathering of people on earth, drawing millions to the sacred city of Makkah each year during the month of Dhul Hijjah.

More than a journey, Hajj is a profound spiritual transformation — a return to primordial submission before Allah, a reenactment of the trials of Ibrahim ﷺ and his family, and an opportunity for total renewal and forgiveness.

Spiritual Foundations

The Virtues of Hajj

01

It Leads to Paradise

"An accepted Hajj will receive no less a reward than Paradise."

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ — Sahih al-Bukhari 1773 · Sahih Muslim 1349

An accepted pilgrimage means that its expense is from lawfully earned money, that the pilgrim goes to the Sacred House of Allah repenting, shunning immorality, sin, and argument, and that he/she fulfills the pillars and obligatory acts of Hajj.

02

It Expiates Sins

"Whoever performs Hajj and does not have sexual relations (with his wife), sins, or disputes unjustly (during Hajj), he shall return from Hajj as pure and free from sins as on the day on which his mother gave birth to him."

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ — Sahih al-Bukhari 1521 · Sahih Muslim 1350

This purification is total — not merely a reduction of sins but a complete slate wiped clean. The scholars note that this applies to minor sins; major sins require sincere repentance in addition to the Hajj.

03

It is a Reason for Getting Rich

"Make the Hajj and the Umrah follow one another closely, for they remove poverty and sins as a blacksmith's bellows remove impurities from iron, gold, and silver."

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ — Sunan al-Tirmidhi 810 · Sunan al-Nasa'i 2631

The Prophet ﷺ linked repeated pilgrimage to the removal of both spiritual and material poverty. Just as a blacksmith's bellows burn away dross, Hajj and Umrah cleanse a person's affairs — and Allah replaces what is spent with something better.

04

Security & Allah's Protection

"The safety of three kinds of people is guaranteed by Allah. One of them is: A man who made a journey for Hajj."

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ — Sunan Ibn Majah 2892 · Classified Hasan

Allah personally guarantees the security of the pilgrim. This divine protection encompasses the journey to Makkah, the time spent in the sacred precincts, and the return home — making Hajj one of the most dignified acts a believer can undertake.

Spiritual Foundations

Sunnah & Desirable Acts of Hajj

As for the Sunnah and recommended acts, the one who does them will be rewarded in compliance while the one who abandons them will not be punished. A believer who performs them seeking the reward and nearness to Allah and His pleasure shall have a great reward. Sunnah acts are protective of obligatory acts — whoever performs the supererogatory and desirable things will be more committed to duties.

Hadith Qudsi

“My slave keeps on coming closer to Me through performing Nawafil (supererogatory acts of worship) until I love him.”

1

Taking a bath for Ihram

2

Nail trimming and beard grooming

3

Shaving pubic hair and armpits

4

Perfuming the body and clothes before the intention of entering Ihram

5

Assuming Ihram after an obligatory prayer or a two-rak'ah prayer

6

Wearing two white towels — one for the upper part of the body, one for the lower part

The Four Pillars

Pillars of Hajj

Ihram — The Sacred State

The sacred state of purity entered by wearing seamless white garments, making intention (niyyah), and reciting the Talbiyah.

لَبَّيْكَ ٱللَّهُمَّ لَبَّيْكَ لَبَّيْكَ لَا شَرِيكَ لَكَ لَبَّيْكَ

The Talbiyah

  • Forbidden during Ihram: cutting hair or nails, wearing perfume, hunting, or engaging in marital relations
  • Men wear two unsewn white cloths (izar and rida')
  • Women wear their normal modest clothing — no face covering required during Ihram

Quranic reference: Al-Baqarah 2:197

Day-by-Day Guide

8 Dhul Hijjah

Yawm al-Tarwiyah

Day of Preparation

Pilgrims travel to Mina and enter the state of Ihram. The five daily prayers are prayed in Mina (shortened but not combined). Spend the night in Mina in preparation for the great day ahead.

Key Actions

  • Enter Ihram at the Miqat
  • Travel to Mina
  • Pray Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, Isha, and Fajr in Mina
  • Spend the night in Mina

المواقيت المكانية

Spatial Miqaats

Allah, the Almighty, appointed spatial Miqaats for the people coming from Islamic countries, which were detailed by His Messenger (peace be upon him). Every pilgrim must assume Ihram from the Miqaat he passes by on his way. When he reaches the Miqaat designated to his country, he must stop in order to enter Ihram, as it is forbidden for him to pass beyond the Miqaat without entering Ihram. If he trespasses it without entering Ihram, he must return to it. If he assumes Ihram after he goes past this Miqaat, he must offer a Fidyah (compensation).

Ibn ʿAbbas (may Allah be pleased with them) narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) designated Dhul-Hulaifah as the Miqaat for the people of Al-Madinah, Al-Juhfah for the people of Ash-Sham, Qarn Al-Manazil for the people of Najd, and Yalamlamfor the people of Yemen — and said: “These places are for the people (coming from the specified countries) as well as for others who pass by them on their way to perform Hajj or ʿUmrah.”

✈ Air Travellers

Those travelling by air should enter Ihram before boarding — or at the latest when the aircraft reaches the airspace above their designated Miqat. Many airlines announce this over the intercom. Passing the Miqat without Ihram requires a dam (penalty sacrifice).

أنواع النسك

Types of Hajj

There are three ways to perform Hajj. Each pilgrim chooses the type that suits their circumstance — all are valid.

حَجُّ التَّمَتُّع

Hajj al-Tamattu'

"Enjoying" — Umrah then Hajj

🐑 Hady (sacrifice) requiredﷺ Prophetically recommended

How it Works

  1. 1

Enter Ihram for Umrah at the Miqat

  2. 2

Complete Umrah — Tawaf, Sa'i, then shave/cut hair

  3. 3

Exit Ihram and rest in Makkah

  4. 4

Re-enter Ihram for Hajj on 8 Dhul Hijjah

  5. 5

Complete the full rituals of Hajj

The most common type today. The Prophet ﷺ wished he had performed it.

"Here I am, O Allah, here I am. Here I am — You have no partner — here I am. Verily, all praise, grace, and sovereignty belong to You. You have no partner."
